Making money with Pay Per View traffic (PPV)

Just sharing some knowledge to all fellow online marketeers, affiliates and advertising networks. Get in touch if you want to know more or use PPV traffic for generating revenues with campaigns.

Make money with PPV traffic

One way to make really good money using Affiliate Marketing is by buying PPV (Pay-per-View or CPV Cost-per-View) traffic and sending the traffic to Affiliate campaigns. As you are buying on a CPV basis and get paid per conversion this traffic type has to be set up very well in order to make consistent stream of revenue and we will provide you with some tips below:

For the ones that are not familiar with PPV traffic, the user flow usually works as follows:

1. The final user has installed a Search toolbar in his browser through which he can search things on the Internet.
   
2. Every time the user searches for something he will type a few keywords in the search field such as “buy a car”
   
3. The user gets the results on his screen (comparable to Google Search results) and if there is a advertiser bidding for the keywords that the user typed the user will get a pop under (or up) with the advertiser landing page (in this case “buy a car”). If more then one advertisers are bidding on the keyword it’s the one with the highest bid that gets the traffic.

So after clarifying the source of the PPV traffic we can start explaining how Publishers can actually make money from this source.

How to start making money from PPV traffic:

1. First you got to select campaigns from an Affiliate Network that are suitable for PPV traffic. In general PPV Advertising (or PPV in short) works very well for specific offers that have a high Search rating such as big brand names, but also generic advertisers that offer services such as Payday Loans, credit rating & background checks, e-commerce and dating. The other campaign selection criteria like a Lead campaign vs a Sale campaign or Single Optin or Double Optin conversion points are similar to when buying traffic through other sources. The general rule of thumb is that the harder it is to generate a conversion the lower the conversion rate and the higher the payout. We recommend you to sign up for an affiliate platform like ChameleonAds and search for campaigns that allow PPV traffic. Your account manager will be able to help you with selecting campaigns.
   
2. Afterwards you will need to set the campaign up in a PPV traffic network where you can buy the traffic. 3. Next is to set up a bidding strategy on keywords. There are plenty of different approaches and all depends on the risk you want to take and how fast you want to get started. In general we see 2 most common options:
   1. Buy as much as possible for a high bid and quickly see what works and then shut down all the non-profitable ones and optimize the others. Obviously this is a more risky approach and you need to be prepared that you will lose some money the first days, the advantage is that you get a flying kickstart and within a few hours you start seeing nice commissions coming in.
   2. Start with the lowest bid possible and optimize slowly, check keywords that make some conversions and increase the bit slowly based on initial results.
      
4. One very important next decision is if you redirect the traffic directly to the Advertisers Landing Page or you make use of a Prelander. We will explain both options:
   1. Directly sending the traffic to the landingpage of the advertiser is the fastest way to convert traffic and you don’t put any intermediate steps in the middle.
   2. However, creating an intermediate Prelander can increase conversion. Imagine you are sending traffic to a payday offer somewhere just before the end of the month and you can warm the user up with some questions if he would like to have a bit of extra money this month, the user can be more motivated to fill out his details on the next page. If you are into programming yourself you can make the Landingpage yourself or if you prefer you can use landingpage creation sites like: http://www.afflanders.com or http://www.ppvtools.com . Before making a prelander we recommend you double-check with your Account Manager of the Affiliate Network if this is allowed.
      
5. Last is the continuous task of optimizing the traffic, which will take you most time on a daily basis. Most offers require only a couple of minutes of optimization per day although it all depends on the amount of keywords you are bidding on. You can set up A/B testing with Landingpages and targeting (time, frequency caps, zipcode etc). It requires a lot of finetuning on keyword bidding but once you hit that sweet spot, it can be a big moneymaker and some affiliates do make 5 over number months running PPV traffic for just 2 to 3 offers.

We would recommend for anyone starting out in the PPV space to start off slow, test 100-200$, optimize daily your keywords and then scale up. It’s also absolutely necessary to have your campaign tracking set up correctly on a keyword level so you can optimize your traffic buying.

Incent Traffic and how to make it convert

There are basically three types of incent traffic that exist both on desktop and mobile:

1. Virtual currency – the user gets virtual currency, usually in a game, so that he can advance in the game faster in exchange for engaging with an ad (installing app, subscribing CPL, or making a sale). The higher the CPO the advertiser pays out, the more virtual currency you’ll get

2. Interstitial traffic – you are watching a free movie and it stops or reading an article and it stops after page 1, until you engage with an ad, then you can continue to see/read the rest

3. Reward programs on emails – users get rewards (pearls, coins, points etc) for opening emails. Once they have enough pearls or coins, they can exchange those points for a product (e.g. iphone, ipod, computer) depending on the amount of points you have

As you can understand incent traffic has two important characteristics:

1. The user is NOT per se interested in your ad, the user is interested in the virtual currency or points he can earn.

2. There is massive international volume of users available for the above three mentioned traffic sources.  Have a look at the size of the biggest incent players (tapjoy, trialpay, supersonicads, fyber, etc) – all of these companies are huge both in numbers of people as in revenues. This proves the size of the channel is massive.

So how do you make these two characteristics work with each other instead of working against each other? How can you make use of that volume and drive traffic that still holds value for the advertiser (otherwise your traffic will get paused)?

The answer lies not with the affiliate or the traffic source in this case, but with the advertiser.

The advertiser has to be ready, prepared and set up to accept these traffic sources. That’s why its very important to never drive incent traffic if the advertiser does not allow it.

Incent traffic has a lower value than non-incent traffic, but as there is huge volume in there, with the right payout it can help an advertiser grow its user base, increase sales numbers or number of leads in a profitable way.
That of course if its set up in the right way.

Driving volume with incent traffic is easy, making it back out ROI wise for the advertiser is the hard part. It is the affiliate network’s job to check the following points with the advertiser before running incent traffic (even if they do allow it straight away):

1. Have a solid anti fraud mechanismn in place to detect manual pixel fires. A small number of incent users will try to manually fire the pixel in order to get as much virtual currency as they can.
This is just one example of ways a user can fraud the system. Another one is, for example, using fake credit cards in case of a CPS campaign

2. Having clear agreements with the advertiser. You can’t expect the advertiser to pay for duplicates or frauds. Important is that you get these numbers in time (within 10 days of the month’s end) from the advertiser in order to finish billing and communicate the billable numbers to your incent partner. The disapproval rate will be way higher than with non incent traffic, but then again the volume makes up for that. Incent traffic will only really work for advertisers that have a low processing cost per user (be it a valid or invalid user)

3. Most importantly, have the right sales funnel. incent traffic is great for CPS campaigns if the advertiser has a good credit card check mechanism that filters out fake or invalid cards in real time. For CPL campaigns I would only recommend it if the user details that have to be provided are rather long (+10 fields) and for example the phone number is asked and pinged to verify if its real or not. For CPI campaigns on mobile, incent is usually only used as burst campaigns in order to increase an app’s ranking in the app store and with that, create a “snowball effect” – the higher the app goes in the ranking, the more organic installs will come

4. Communication – its very important the advertiser is right on the ball and there is daily communciation between the network and the advertiser on which Pub IDs are having good ROI, which ones have high disapproval rates, and which ones are driving fraud. The network should communicate with the incent partners on a daily basis as well so the incent network can delete that small amount of users that try to trick the system.

In conclusion, its important to have the right set up (sales funnel), good communication advertiser/network/publisher and also have the right expectations about incent traffic (very high volume, relatively low quality with low ROI margin, compensated by the high volume) before starting off.

How to prevent & detect fraud in Affiliate Marketing

With more and more people dedicating their lives to affiliate marketing on a global scale, it is also becoming increasingly clear that more and more people are in the game for making a quick buck and are not afraid to trick the system. Add to that, the “lawlessness” and anonymity of the internet, and you have a magnet for fraudsters – and fraud traffic.

So how do you distinguish a good affiliate from a fraud? On the surface they look the same, and fraudsters are smart and dedicated people who do everything to mirror the same behaviour and patterns of a good affiliate. One should definitely not underestimate them. On top of that, there are thousands of affiliates out there which makes it harder to filter the good ones from the bad ones.

No reason to start panicking. There are a few ways and tools an affiliate network can work with in order to seperate the good guys from the bad ones. At Chameleonads we take this very serious, and we keep on investing in our technology and manpower to assure high-quality traffic for our advertisers.

So, how do you do it?

1. Analyze the approval rate. Although at first sight the traffic looks clean and the affiliate looks trustworthy, eventually the advertiser will get back with specific feedback on the conversions provided by every specific affiliate (ChameleonAds uses PubIDs for that). Fraudsters will generally have a disapproval rate of their conversions that is well above 50%.

2. Implement an anti-fraud system (SaaS software). We work with Forensiq to filter not only our traffic sources but also our publisher sign up process so we get a better view on who we work with.

3. Analyze IPs. Most fraudsters will drive multiple conversions from the same IP, which never happens on a good traffic source. Or the IPs will be very similar and go in ascending/descending order.

4. Analyze conversion rates. If the conversion rate of any given traffic source is significantly higher than the average conversion rate on your campaign, then this could be an indication of fraud. I put this measure on the last place in our list because most fraudsters are smart enough to not drive insanely high conversion rates – they know affiliate networks look at this.

There are a few measures that, at first sight, look like great anti-fraud measures but actually these measures don’t prevent fraud at all, such as:

1. The affiliate puts a fake name/address in the sign up process or pretends to be someone (s)he’s not. This happens especially with Asian affiliates. The reason they do this is because 1) they believe it increases their chances to get accepted into the network if they provide an American or European sounding name and 2) Asian cultures – especially Chinese people – have a tendency to use Western names when working with people in the Western hemisphere. This doens’t mean they deliver fraud traffic. There are many amazing affiliates, with very good traffic, coming from Africa, Asia, the Middle-East and Latin America.

2. The affiliate puts a website or traffic source on the signup form that is not his. Many affiliate networks have two divisions. One is the affiliate arm, the other is the media buying arm. Affiliates are afraid that if they reveal their real traffic sources, the network will cut them out once they start delivering good revenues on a certain campaign. And they are right to be afraid – this happens a lot. In order to avoid this clear conflict of interest with our affiliates, at ChameleonAds, we do not engage in any media buying activities ourselves. We focus 100% on our affiliates and want to provide them with the best personalised service & technology there is.

Remnant Traffic: convert “lost traffic” into a profit

noun: remnant; plural noun: remnants
1. a part or quantity that is left after the greater part has been used, removed, or destroyed.

So what is remnant traffic in the context of affiliate marketing? Remnant traffic – also called residual traffic – is any and all traffic that is coming from a traffic source you did not intent to use for the promotion of your campaign.

Every campaign has its own targeting metrics such as country, language, mobile carrier, and allowed vs. not allowed traffic sources. Apart from this, remnant traffic can also be generated by back button redirects, if your campaign gets paused by the advertiser without notice but traffic is still flowing (we’ve all been there!) or by redirecting the user when he/she clicks on the close-screen button in the browser.

In an ideal world you will only get traffic that complies with all these restrictions and conditions, but in reality a small portion of your traffic will not comply with the pre-specified campaign conditions. This can go up to as high as 10% in some campaigns but is normally only 1-3% of your total campaign traffic.

Its important to remark that the above described remnant traffic to your campaign is fully worthless to your advertiser as the advertiser does not accept this traffic, and hence will not pay for it.

Summing up the fact that the advertiser won’t pay for remnant traffic, and that this traffic can still make up a small – but nevertheless important – part of your entire traffic, one can easily see an opportunity is missed to make (more) money with your traffic and to optimize your entire A to Z revenue stream on a particular campaign.

A few companies have seen this gap in the market and can help you to monetize your remnant traffic. This can increase your revenues with 1-3% or even more, depending on how much remnant traffic your campaigns generally have.

As margins are shrinking due to increased competition in the affiliate marketing space, this can often make the difference between making money or losing money. Adblockers are ordinary thiefs

Last week I read an article on Adblockers and their impact on free content that really caught my attention. The article is in Dutch but you can find it here: http://www.demorgen.be/tvmedia/christian-van-thillo-lezers-die-geen-advertenties-doorlaten-krijgen-geen-gratis-nieuws-meer-b907e77e/

Basically adblockers allow users to install a piece of software on their computer that blocks all the (annoying?) ads on websites the user surfs to. While at first sight adblockers seem to serve a meaningful purpose and help the user, after analyzing their activity in more detail, one has to conlude that they are hurting the user instead of helping them.

In the above mentioned article Christian Van Thillo, who is the CEO of De Persgroep, a digital publishing company that is focused on the Benelux markets with approx. 5,400 employees and +1.3€ billion in annual revenues, refers to adblockers as “Ordinary Thiefs”.

I agree 100% with the opinion expressed by Mr. Van Thillo for the following two reasons:

1. Free does not exist

There are two models: free vs premium. Website owners either work on a “free” model whereby the user enjoys free content as the advertiser generates its revenues through ads. Or a premium model whereby there are no ads but the user has to pay to get access to the content (e.g. Netflix).

Adblockers will lead website owners to charge their users for the content they provide. This is not good for anyone as the internet should be accessible for everyone, and not just for people who can afford to pay for the content. The user should have the choice to opt for the free model (i.e. for free but with ads) or the premium model (i.e. paying but without ads).

2. Adblockers will still show you Ads and/or sell your data

Although adblockers claim they won’t show you any ads after installing their software on your computer, they will effectively still show you ads. They will only show you ads from advertisers that PAY them to let their ads through. By doing this, the adblocker defeats its own purpose and cheats on the user as they claim to not show you any ads. Adblock Plus, one of the largest adblockers on the Internet, is a business and the primary purpose of a business is to make money by charging advertisers to still show their ads to the users. They are basically strongarming advertisers: pay us, or your ads won’t be shown anymore.

Other adblockers such as Ghostery make money by collecting data about your surfing behaviour and then sell that data to publishing companies so they can, guess what, better target their ads to your interests.

Some say adblockers will lead advertisers to rethink their ads, and how ads will be displayed to the consumer in the future will change thanks to adblockers. New forms of advertising will come up and replace the old ones. Native advertising is one of these forms, whereby ads are blended in with content and are not so obvious to recognize as the traditional banner ads.

That is partly true, but adblockers will still steal away a substantial part of the revenues website owners need to provide the free content the user enjoys. Native ads complement traditional banner ads, they don’t replace them. In the example of De Persgroep that currently offers most of its digital content for free to their users, they need the advertising revenues to pay for their employees, hosting, offices, etc in order to keep on providing the free content to their readers.

Others will say adblockers disrupt business-as-usual, and that is true. This is in fact the only awesome part of an adblocker. I am all for market disruption IF it is done in an honest, transparant and straightforward way (like Uber has done). Which in my opinion is not the case with adblockers as the disabling of the ads that pay is either very well hidden in the software the user installs, not communicated at all, or with some adblockers not even possible at all. Adblockers have a shady and untransparant business model.

I am quite sure that +95% of internet users genuinely think they won’t see any ad if they install the software on their computer and that +99% of all users do not know that the adblocker will aggregate and sell their data and surf behaviour to whoever is willing to pay for it. With Uber the value proposition is crystal clear to the user, with adblockers it simply isn’t.

To conclude. Given that adblockers infringe the privacy of users, sell user data to whoever wants to pay for it, defeat their own purpose by still showing ads to users, and last but not least steal away revenues from publishing companies – that are needed to keep on delivering content for free – one can conclude adblockers are a Trojan horse to the end user and should therefore be forbidden by law.

How to make money with Pop Up & Pop…

Popups and popunders are small windows generated by a website when it is opened or closed. Popups “pop up” on top of the website you are visiting. Popunders are less intrusive than popups as they open behind the website you’re visiting.

One of the words to describe this marketing channel is probably “annoying” but another accurate description is “effective”. You may be annoyed to see them, but the fact is that they are very effective in getting an advertiser’s message across to users.

Pop ups/unders are a great way to get some additional revenue out of your website(s) but at the same time you have to be careful not to overload the user with ads. According to research, pop up/under ads generate 1.5 to 2 times as much money compared with standard banners.

Here are some tips to manage your pop up/under ads:

1. Frequency capping: never use more than one pop up/under per page of your website, and limit the appearance of the same ad to once a day. Each user should maximum see two different pop up/under ads per day while browsing your site.

2. Monitor impact on site performance: Watch the impact pop-ups have on your site’s performance especially the amount of weekly visitors, bounce rate and average amount of time spend on your site before vs. after running pops.

3. Analyze impact on your other ads: analyze the eCPM you are making with all your other ads before vs. after running pop up/under ads. The ultimate goal is to increase your total revenues, not to have cannabilization amongst your ads.

4. Use cookies: pop campaigns work great with big brand names as the conversion can happen on the cookie. Make sure with your advertiser 1) that they allow pop up/under traffic and 2) that you have a minimum cookie duration of 30 days but preferably even longer.

5. Balance: Find a good equilibrium between maximizing your revenues and the user’s experience. This is up to the website owner to decide.

What is truly important to affiliates?

What is important to affiliates and what do they care about when choosing which Affiliate Network to work with?

Easy question. Difficult answer.

Why are my campaigns not converting?

At ChameleonAds we work with around 12,500 affiliates. Lots of them are very succesfull with their campaigns but of course every affiliate from time to time runs into a campaign that just doesn’t seem to work for him or her. The main question we get in such a situation from our affiliate is then:

“Why is my campaign not converting?”

How can we answer this question and help the frustrated affiliate onto the path of generating conversions and hence profitability. How can we know why the exact same affiliate is (very) succesful on one campaign, but desastrously bad on another.

Here below I will lay out some of the potential reasons why a campaign is not converting for an affiliate, and what specific steps the affiliate can take to counter this. These problems & counter measures are in no way exhaustive, they are just my personal experience of working for +10 years in this industry managing hunderds of affiliates on various campaigns.

Here we go.

1. The link is not working

This means the URL does not redirect to the offer. This can be because of either the advertiser or network taking the link down. This results in no conversions being tracked at all. Not by the affiliate, network or advertiser. All the money down the drain if you keep on sending traffic. Big problem – Easy solution. Important is to detect this FAST.

Solution?
– Agree on a 48 hour notice period with your affiliate network before they cut your link
– Check with your network if they are automatically running all their links every 24 hours in order to detect broken links.
– Redirect broken link traffic to a proven back-up offer

2. Tracking is not working

First of all, never run any campaign without tracking. Its the same than driving a car blindfolded. I have never done this before, but I’m sure it won’t end well. You can’t measure or see anything, and you can’t optimize your campaigns towards profitability.

Also, never run any campaign without testing your tracking first. At ChameleonAds we support both C2S and S2S postback tracking and we are fully integrated with tracking solutions such as Voluum, Cake, Prosper202, Adsbridge and many more.

If there are no conversions, and the link is working (point 1), then ask the affiliate network how much conversions they are seeing on their end – or just login to the platform and check for yourself. If tracking is not working for some reason, stop all traffic immediately and fix it + test it extensively before going live again.

Solution?
Coordinate pixel setup with your dedicate account manager. Place a test conversion. Make sure it shows up in your interface. Only then you can take the offer live again.

3. The volume you are sending is (way) too low

Some affiliates tell me “I send 20 clicks and don’t see a conversion yet. This campaign is sh**”

Not true. To make some statistically relevant conclusions, you should send enough volume in order to determine whether the campaign is working for you or not.

Solution?
We recommend you to send at least 200 unique clicks to any offer before dedicing to cut it. Sometimes a bit of patience and persistence is all it takes in order to get the conversion in. Don’t give up too soon – you might be missing out on a big opportunity.

4. The traffic source is not the right one for the offer

Every offer will work well…on the right traffic source. But run a any given offer on a traffic source that is untargeted and not right for the offer, and it won’t work. In order to figure out what traffic source is right for your offer, you need to be willing to invest some money into doing A/B testing.

Don’t be afraid to spend your test budget in a responsible way and well-thought trough way. Don’t look at it as losing money, look at it as gathering data and learning what works vs. what doesn’t.

Solution?

5. Keep on A/B testing

If you have done steps 1 to 4 and are finally seeing one, or hopefully a few more conversions, let it run for a few days to get some data in. 10 tips to improve your Email Campaigns

Opt-in email marketing is still a very big channel for affiliate marketeers. Its a channel with worldwide coverage that generally provides big volumes of high-quality traffic.

Here are 10 tips to improve your email creatives so that you can make more money with your campaigns and increase your profit margins.

1. Always work with a Call-To-Action (CTA) that is big and rather flashy. The goal of the CTA is to engage the user to click on it so CTR is a very important metric to determine the effectiveness of your Call-To-Action button. Its also important to A/B test a lot of Call to Actions against each other. Here are some examples:

2. Personalize your emails. You can do this by putting the first name and possibly also the last name in the subjectline, and in the email creative itself. Additionally, you can also mention the user’s location in the email creative (if you have that information available).

3. Have a good ratio of images vs text. Never send out an email creative that consists of only images as a lot of email providers don’t automatically load images from unkown senders. This will lead to the user seeing an ugly red cross. A good image/text ratio is not only less spam sensitive, it will also provide the user with the possibility to read your email if the images don’t load or load too slow.

4. Show your product or service, and its core benefits. Describe these benefits briefly in bullet point format. Also important is to emphasize the promotion or discount you are giving away. For example: free shipping, buy two products & get the third one for free, get a 20% discount on your first purchase, etc.

5. Avoid ! and other spam sensitive signs and words such as $$$ or “FREE”. Usage of these signs/words will increase the probability of your email ending up in spam. Example: instead of using “free shipping” you could say “shipping included”.

6. Have an unsubscribe link. In many countries this is mandatory by law, especially in Europe.

7. Put your company name, address, contact details and possibly also the link to your corporate Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin page in the bottom of the email. This will create trust with the user.

8. Analyze the open rate, click through rate (CTR) and conversion rate of all your email marketing campaigns. Continuously A/B test different subject lines, email creatives and landing pages to increase the before mentioned three metrics. This will help you make more money with your campaigns. Remember to always change one variable at the time so you can meausure the impact of the change.

9. The size of your email creative should ideally be 500*500 and maximum 500*650 as otherwise the user will need to horizontally scroll to read your text (not good!).
